 Prevention of long-term work absence by planning and anticipating return to work in co-operation between different stakeholders is crucial INTRODUCTION Managing long-term work absence due to sickness continues to be a priority of many EU-countries. Direct and indirect costs to organisations and companies are extremely high. These costs include sick pay, social insurance payments, costs of temporary and overtime work, costs of occupational health services, and negative effects on profitability, productivity, and quality of work. The methods that are used to calculate the costs vary across countries However, a conservative estimate of the average cost of absenteeism to a nation is 2.2% of GDP.
